inka privacy policy

Effective 10 October 2026. Applies to inka 1.0.1 and later for Android, as published on Google Play.

inka is a notebook app for writing by hand. It has no accounts, no sign-in, no ads and no analytics of ours, and we run no server that receives your notes. What you write, draw, record or import stays on your tablet.

What stays on your tablet

If your tablet's Android backup is on, Android may include inka's own notebook storage in your backup to your Google account, as it does for other apps. That is Android's backup, under your Google account's settings; you can turn it off there.

The two downloads

inka needs the internet for two one-time downloads, and for nothing else.

  1. The handwriting model, from Google. The first time you write in a language, inka downloads Google's ML Kit digital ink recognition model for it (about 20 MB per language) from Google's servers. After that, handwriting is read on the tablet, offline. ML Kit is Google's software inside the app: when it downloads models and while it runs, it may send Google technical information such as the device model, Android version, the app's name and version, and how the recognizer performs and fails, for diagnostics and to improve ML Kit. It does not send your handwriting or your notes. Google handles this under its own privacy policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy); see also ML Kit's data disclosure (https://developers.google.com/ml-kit/android-data-disclosure).
  2. The speech model, from Hugging Face, only if you turn transcripts on. Transcripts are off at first. Turning them on downloads a speech model (whisper.cpp "small", about 190 MB) once, over Wi-Fi only, from Hugging Face (huggingface.co), where its makers publish it (https://huggingface.co/ggerganov/whisper.cpp). inka checks the file is exactly the published one before using it. It is a plain file download: inka sends nothing about you or your recordings, and has no Hugging Face account. Like any web server, Hugging Face and its network providers see the address the download comes from in order to send the file; they handle that under Hugging Face's own privacy policy (https://huggingface.co/privacy). The model then runs on the tablet, and your recordings never leave it.

Permissions

Sharing

We don't sell, share or receive your data. When you share a notebook file yourself (from your files app, say), it goes where you send it, with what's in it.

Children

inka is a general notebook app, not made for children under 13, and collects nothing from anyone.

Deleting your data

Delete a notebook to move it to the bin, and empty the bin to delete it for good. Uninstalling inka deletes everything in its own storage; notebooks you kept in a folder of your own stay there until you delete them.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes, the new version will be here, with its date, and in the app's listing. Questions: nameisyosef@gmail.com.
